Photo booth and multi-user game for the VW Group

Technologies:TYPO3 (Headless) Node Socke.io Redis

Background

For the exhibition stand at the ‘We Are Developers’ conference, the agency devised a striking display: a photo booth where visitors could have professional photos taken for their social media profiles, and a multi-player game in which visitors use their mobile phones as controllers to play against one another. As the technical partner, we were commissioned to carry out the programming.

Challenge

  • Straightforward registration and booking for the photo booth
  • A real-time server for the game and a controller UI for mobile phones

Solution

We enabled access to registration and spontaneous participation in the game via QR codes. We implemented the photobooth components – double opt-in, a dashboard for the photographer and appointment booking – using TYPO3 Headless. We built the multi-user server using Node.js, Socket.io and Redis.

Conclusion

Despite high mobile network utilisation on site and the longer signal paths compared with Bluetooth controllers, the action game ran in real time and without any noticeable lag. The easily accessible game proved a real crowd-puller and was used extensively.

“For the past ten years, Q3i has been our reliable partner for the technical implementation of complex projects. Q3i works independently, is solution-oriented and always thinks proactively. This builds trust and makes working with them particularly straightforward for us.”
